After a collision, you may feel fine for a day or two and then notice a stiff neck, headaches or back pain. Form & Function Chiropractic provides injury treatment for car accident patients in Lake Oswego, with Dr. Jeff Devine leading care. This page explains what to expect and how Oregon insurance typically works.
Common injuries after a car accident
- Whiplash and neck pain
- Headaches
- Shoulder and upper back tightness
- Low back pain and pelvic strain
- Tingling or numbness in the arms or legs
How we approach injury care
Our injury care process has five steps: assess what is restricted and what is compensating, adjust to restore motion, activate supporting muscles with targeted exercise, assist recovery with tools such as Erchonia laser therapy when suitable, and advance the plan as you improve. Imaging is ordered only when it is clinically warranted, and we refer you for a medical workup when needed. Related pages on the main clinic site include neck pain, low back pain and whiplash.
Oregon insurance basics
Oregon has a no-fault personal injury protection system, often called PIP. Auto insurance typically covers the first $15,000 in medical and chiropractic care regardless of who caused the crash, and coverage beyond that depends on your policy. Our office helps with claim documentation and verifies coverage. Please confirm your own benefits with your insurer.
What to bring and do
- The date of the accident and your claim number if you have one
- A list of your symptoms and when they started
- Your insurance information
- Any imaging or ER records
Recovery often has good days and bad days
Soft tissue injuries rarely improve in a straight line. You may feel better for a day and then notice stiffness after a long drive or a poor night of sleep. We adjust your plan as you respond, and we explain what is normal and what should prompt a call. Gentle motion, good posture and gradual return to activity usually matter more than rest alone. If your symptoms are not improving as expected, we will talk about referral for imaging or another provider.
What your first visit looks like
Your first visit starts with a conversation about your history, when your accident-related pain began, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to get back to doing. Dr. Devine then examines you, explains what he finds in plain language, and recommends a plan before you leave. X-rays are used only when they are clinically warranted. Adjustments can use Diversified, Activator, Drop Table, Torque Release or SOT techniques, so you can choose a gentler approach if you prefer.
When to get medical care first
Go to the emergency room after an accident if you lost consciousness, have severe head, neck or chest pain, weakness, confusion, or vomiting. Chiropractic care should follow medical clearance.
