Foot pain does more than make walking uncomfortable. It can change how you move and strain your knees, hips and back. At Form & Function Chiropractic, Dr. Jeff Devine looks at how your feet, hips and spine work together. Learn how hand and foot pain care works at our Lake Oswego clinic.

Common foot complaints

  • Heel or arch pain
  • Morning stiffness or first-step pain, often related to plantar tissue tightening overnight
  • Big-toe joint pain
  • Aching after long periods of standing or walking

Why we look beyond the foot

Footwear alone rarely explains foot pain. Dr. Devine examines the painful area and the joints and muscles above it, since symptoms may involve the ankle, hip or spine. Nerve or movement patterns from the neck or low back can cause symptoms further down the body, so a thorough exam matters. If your ankle or wrist is involved, see our main clinic page on wrist and ankle pain.

What care can include

Care may include adjustments, movement and strengthening exercises, and advice on footwear and daily habits. Laser therapy and rehab and physiotherapy can be added when appropriate. Because foot pain can connect to the low back, see our pages on low back pain and sciatica.

Habits that help

  • Alternate shoes and choose supportive footwear for your activity
  • Build up walking and running gradually
  • Take breaks from long periods of standing
  • Stretch the calves and feet gently

Choosing the right shoes and surfaces

Supportive footwear that fits your activity can reduce strain, and alternating pairs can vary the load. Sudden increases in walking, running or time on hard floors are a common trigger for heel and arch pain. Build up gradually and notice if pain changes your stride, since that can pass stress to the knee, hip or back.

What your first visit looks like

Your first visit starts with a conversation about your history, when your foot pain began, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to get back to doing. Dr. Devine then examines you, explains what he finds in plain language, and recommends a plan before you leave. X-rays are used only when they are clinically warranted. Adjustments can use Diversified, Activator, Drop Table, Torque Release or SOT techniques, so you can choose a gentler approach if you prefer.

When to get medical care first

See a medical provider promptly for foot pain with fever, redness and swelling, an open wound, sudden numbness, or after a significant injury. People with diabetes should have foot symptoms evaluated by their doctor.

Common questions

Can a chiropractor help with heel pain?

We can evaluate how the foot, hip and spine are moving and recommend care. Your plan is based on your exam.

Do I need orthotics?

Footwear and supports may help some people. Dr. Devine will tell you whether they make sense after your exam.

How is morning foot pain explained?

The tissue under the foot can tighten overnight, causing first-step pain. We look at the cause and recommend care.
