About Dunthorpe
Dunthorpe is an unincorporated suburb of Portland, a census-designated place just south of Portland’s city limits on the west side of the Willamette River. Lake Oswego, Lewis & Clark College and Tryon Creek State Park are all nearby.
The community dates to January 1916, when William M. Ladd’s Ladd Estate Company bought 215 acres from the Oregon Iron & Steel Company. Its best-known landmark is Elk Rock Gardens of the Bishop’s Close, a 13-acre estate on a high bluff above the Willamette, with about 6 acres of English-style gardens known for their magnolias. Dunthorpe is served by the Riverdale School District.
Life in Dunthorpe and what your body feels
Large properties, gardens and nearby trails keep many Dunthorpe residents busy outdoors. Pruning, lifting, kneeling and long days of yard work are common sources of sore backs, shoulders and necks.
Commuting to Portland or Lake Oswego adds time in the car. If aches are keeping you from the garden or the trail, Dr. Devine can examine you, explain what he finds and build a plan around what you want to get back to doing.
Chiropractic care for Dunthorpe patients
Here are some of the conditions Form & Function Chiropractic sees most often from Dunthorpe patients. Care is based on an exam, and Dr. Devine will tell you if another type of provider would serve you better.
- Low back pain: Back pain is one of the most common reasons people call us. Dr. Devine looks at the spine, hips and the way you move, then combines adjustments with guidance on posture and activity.
- Shoulder pain: Shoulder trouble can start in the neck, upper back or the joint itself. We assess the whole chain so care addresses the source.
- Neck pain: Stiff, sore necks often come from desk work, driving or sleeping awkwardly. We look for the joints and muscles involved and build a plan to restore comfortable motion.
- Sciatica: Pain, tingling or numbness that travels from the low back or hip down the leg can have several causes. An exam helps us understand what is driving it.
- Headaches and migraines: Some headaches begin in the neck and upper back. We check for those contributors. Sudden, severe or unusual headaches need urgent medical attention.
We also provide car accident care, sports injury care, prenatal care, pediatric care, laser therapy and wellness care. See all services and conditions.
What your first visit looks like
Your first visit with Dr. Devine starts with a conversation about your health history, what brought you in and what you want to get back to doing. He then performs an exam, explains what he finds in plain language, and recommends a care plan. X-rays are used only when they are clinically warranted.
Dr. Devine has practiced for more than 25 years and trained at Palmer West Chiropractic College. Co-owner Jodi Black is a nutrition coach, and the clinic also offers Erchonia laser therapy and rehab and physiotherapy options for patients who need extra support.
