About Durham
Durham is a small Washington County city of 1,944 people (2020 census) covering about 0.41 square miles. It is surrounded by Tigard and Tualatin and sits next to the Bridgeport Village shopping area. Upper Boones Ferry Road is the main road through the city, and Interstate 5 is about half a mile to the east.
The city is named for Albert Alonzo Durham, described as the founder of Lake Oswego, who ran a sawmill and flour mill on Fanno Creek from 1866 until his death in 1898. The Oregon Electric Railway established a Durham stop in 1908, and the city incorporated in 1966. Durham City Park sits on the western edge of town.
Life in Durham and what your body feels
It is a nice link to our own neighborhood: the man the city is named for is tied to the founding of Lake Oswego, so Durham and our clinic share local history.
Durham residents tend to live a few minutes from major roads and shopping, which means a lot of driving and errands. Hours in the car, carrying groceries and time at a desk can leave your neck and low back sore. We look at how your whole body moves, not just the spot that hurts.
Chiropractic care for Durham patients
Here are some of the conditions Form & Function Chiropractic sees most often from Durham patients. Care is always based on an exam, and Dr. Devine will tell you if another type of provider would serve you better.
- Low back pain: Back pain is one of the most common reasons people call us. Dr. Devine looks at the spine, hips and the way you move, then combines adjustments with guidance on posture and activity.
- Headaches and migraines: Some headaches begin in the neck and upper back. We check for those contributors and talk through daily habits that may help. Sudden, severe or unusual headaches need urgent medical attention.
- Neck pain: Stiff, sore necks often come from desk work, driving or sleeping awkwardly. We look for the joints and muscles involved and build a plan to restore comfortable motion.
- Sciatica: Pain, tingling or numbness that travels from the low back or hip down the leg can have several causes. An exam helps us understand what is driving it before we recommend care.
- Herniated disc: A bulging or herniated disc can cause back pain and leg symptoms. We examine carefully, explain your options and coordinate with other providers when needed.
We also provide car accident care, sports injury care, prenatal care, pediatric care and wellness care. See all services and conditions.
What your first visit looks like
Your first visit with Dr. Devine starts with a conversation about your health history, what brought you in, and what you want to get back to doing. He then performs an exam, explains what he finds in plain language, and recommends a care plan. X-rays are taken in the office only when they are clinically warranted. Adjustments can be done with several techniques, including Diversified, Activator, Drop Table, Torque Release and SOT, so you can choose a gentler approach if you prefer.
Dr. Devine has practiced for more than 25 years and trained at Palmer West Chiropractic College. Co-owner Jodi Black is a nutrition coach, and the clinic also offers Erchonia laser therapy and rehab and physiotherapy options for patients who need extra support.
